What Is Most Important To The Highlands?

What is most important to our community? Everybody has their own opinion. I know I surely have mine. You can concentrate on proper diets, everybody growing their own flower pot garden, but we need something that commands respect. Respect because we have a say in our future, a voice in our government.

Some would say we do have a voice but it is a fractured voice. With three different councilmen sharing our little community,  a voice that is muffled by isolation through separation.

We need a government that listens, that respects our dignity as citizens. We need the right to vote in our own community.

Think Spring

With all this ice and snow about the last color that comes to mind is green and when I think of  vegetables I run to the frozen food isle. Still we are getting close to spring, I mean  hey, pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks. So it's almost growing time.

For ideas on how to become your own greengrocer consult The Highlands Coalition website,http://hclynn.org/.

Whether it is a plot in your back yard or a container garden in your window, you can reap the benefits from growing your own. Taking some responsibility for your own food production is to grant yourself some empowerment. You reap what you sow, so let's start planting.

For Their Next Trick Maybe KIPP Will MakeThe Snow Disappear

Just a quick note about who wasn't at last night's meeting of the Highlands Coalition. Did anyone see a representative from KIPP Academy? I got there during the tail end of introductions but I don't recall hearing their name mentioned.

If that business that disguises itself as a school was sincere about being a real member of our community they should have had a representative present. However I guess they feel the battle is over, they have their postcard location and the illusion is complete Maybe instead of pulling a rabbit out of a hat, maybe spreading of a few well placed "jobs" will enhance the deception.

Highlands On The Move!

Despite mounds of snow everywhere, around 23 people attended last night's meeting of the Highlands Coalition, Inc. last night in the gym of the Ford School. Considering the cold weather the turnout was both amazing and encouraging.

The most exciting aspect of the turnout was the many new faces I saw. Not only were the core older members present but also some young faces. With the younger crowd, HICO should be energized to attain the goals of the coalition. Perhaps this new found energy will carry forward and enable our community to demand the respect we deserve.
