A FESTIVAL OF THE WORLD FROM THE HIGHLANDS
The HIGHLANDS COALITION along with a few others will be sponsering the upcoming event on June 30 from 12 to 6 at Lynn Heritage Park. Get there early. I have inside sources that say there is a great opening act, my daughter ASIAH. She just happens to be a FORD SCHOOL alumni.

COMMUNITY COMPARISONS
I'm down here in WEST "BY GOD" VIRGINIA on assignment looking for KIPP stragglers and they had a startup meeting for a NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH lasr night. They had 200 people. It was in the STEALY section of CLARKSBURG, WV. STEALY is to CLARKSBURG as the HIGHLANDS is to LYNN. Don't you just LOVE those IQ type comparisons.
Anyway CLARKSBURG has about 22,000 people. How many does LYNN have? How many people we have come to the meetings in the HIGHLANDS. And mind you, the HIGHLANDS has the most in LYNN.

CITY CURRENCY TO SWITCH TO THE "LEAD STANDARD"
A "LEAD REMOVAL" grant is rumored to be headed to the HIGHLANDS COALITION worth a LOT of dollars. Election time is just around the corner.
HIGHLANDS CLEANUP
At least twenty people today gathered at the FORD SCHOOL to take a broom , shovel, or leaf blower to not only the parking lot around the school but to the community streets as well. The committed community group include CLEO, TRIPPY, LESLIE AND STEVE GREENBERG, AREDA HEREFORD, LISA CONNALLY, DAVID GASS, and myself. Along with several neighborhood kids (a homework pass had been mentioned) 10 ESSEX DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE CANDIDATE DUSTY CAUFIELD was out getting his hands dirty. Others were there but I'm too tired to type anymore.
Of course pizzas were available for lunch along with a tray of eggrolls. BROTHER'S DELI generously provided some kickin chicken salad.
Several bags of trash have found a new home and it isn't on the side of the road.

HIGHLAND’S HERO
Going forward it will be known as the DR. CLAIRE CRANE SCHOLARSHIP.
Hence forth her tireless efforts to promote the value of education to members
of the HIGHLANDS community will be forever memorialized. Legacy notwithstanding, I will repeat to you
the words I have heard DR. CRANE utter countless times, “It’s all about THE
KIDS”.
THIS IS HOW WE DO IT…….
At the HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting Monday night the FORD
SCHOOL was packed with politicians to engage in a UNITED WAY listening meeting.
LPS was represented by MARIA CARRASCO while the LYNN CITY COUNCIL members HONG
NET and RICH COLUCCI were in attendance. All three candidates for the 10th
ESSEX DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE were present, with 18 year incumbent
REPRESENTATIVE BOB FENNELL joined by fellow Democrat GARDY JEAN FRANSCOIS and
Republican DUSTY CAUFIELD.
Now this was my fourth time attending one of these UNITED
WAY community listening meetings and it was the most energetic one since the
big initial one down at the old EASTERN BANK which is at the foot of the
HIGHLANDS I might add. Hopes and dreams for our community and us were the
topics for our discussion. A realistic look at LYNN’S strengths and weaknesses will hopefully give the UNITED WAY helpful
insights into how to best allocate their resources.
Keeping our fingers crossed that the nice turnout and
active participation will translate into the HIGHLANDS getting a nice slice of
the resource pie!

NEW RESIDENT ON BAY VIEW AVE.
About two thirds the way up on the left side is some swelling member of the rodent family. Back in West "By God" Virginia we might call that varmint a WHISTLE PIG but I kind of doubt that's what it was.
Any way since the DPW hasn't had much snow to remove this past winter, I would think they might have some time to pick up a dead animal.

HENRY AVENUE PARK - TRAHANT STEPS UP TO CLEANUP
On a sunny Saturday morning(TODAY), ANTONIO and TERESA were joined by BOB CONALLY, CLAY WALSH, BARRY MCCAUL, TRIPPY and myself (THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER GIRL WHO GOES TO THE FORD SCHOOL AND LIVES BY THE PARK) to cleanup Henry Avenue Park. The park was pretty much devoid of minor trash.....,
BUT
there was a pile of poles cemented in concrete that had been dug up and place in a pile in the middle of the park. Many thanks go to WARD 2 COUNCILMAN BILLY TRAHANT who donated a backhow and operator to help clean up the mess left behind. (Also when we were done a little after 12 BILLY sent pizzas by - now TRIPPY will be a TRAHANT supporter for life).
Today's cleanup was only phase I of the upcoming park makeover. EASY LANDSCAPING is set to come by and green the place up and there is talk of a play structure coming to the park. We've got to get more community involvement, perhaps the HIGHLAND COALITION could take on more of an active role cause like ANTONIO says he's not getting any younger. "After today, it's bring on the MOTRIN,"

BE CAREFUL OF WHO'S IN THE SHADOWS
Lynn VFW
theft tied to gambling
"Innocent, until proven guilty." "Beyond the shadow of a doubt," that's the bar we set our justice system. I have my doubts that this man could have acted alone or without someone knowing what was going on unless the transaction was done with a handshake and KIPP just gave him a briefcase full of cash.
Lends a little more credence to the HIGHLAND COALITION'S warnings and the lawsuit that was going on, It's a shame that their lawyer who turned out to be the future employer of KIPP'S attorney ended up parting ways.

COOK-OUTS ARE IN
They say "ALL GOOD THINGS COME IN PAIRS", that's at least what MOSES thought and there is that PEANUT-BUTTER AND JELLY combination. So why not have a series of COOK STREET COOKOUTS, you know pair FOOD and PLACE together.
Once everybody is together, they could band together for a community cleanup or even just learn their neighbor's name. The cost could easily be defrayed by contributions from savvy businesses or more savvy politicians.
What's more, what works in the HIGHLANDS could work throughout the city!

EVERYBODY WANTS TO HANG OUT WITH HICO
The HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting tonight was well attended tonight with over 30 people in attendance. COOK STREET PARK was a big topic of discussion specifically the plans for a community garden.
The meeting attracted a good amount of attention from politicians who realize the potential power of citizens engaged in their own community's development. LYNN SCHOOL COMMITTEE members RICK STARBARD and MARIA CARRASCO along with LYNN WARD 4 COUNCILLOR RICHARD COLUCCI and WARD 2 COUNCILLOR BILLY TRAHANT were in attendance. COUNCILLOR-AT-LARGE HONG NET was represented by his aide BOB (I'm not going to try and spell his name) and 10th ESSEX DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE GARDY JEAN-FRANCOIS was also there.
Unfortunately I was shuttling between this meeting and a PAC meeting for LPS but the vibes for positive change in our community were strong a new energy of ownership and responsibility is being born.
PLANTING IN THE PARK
Tonight's HIGHLAND COALITION'S meeting will have a discussion about a COMMUNITY GARDEN at the top of the agenda. The benefits of such a proposal abound. Although a more healthy diet is surely one of them, better nutrition for the body is not the most one.
It is the nutrition for our community's soul that will be most enhanced, a potential for revitalization, and will reap the rewards from a bumper crop of involvement. The growth in our community will parallel the growth in the garden as a new sense of ownership permeates the land. This is our park, this is my park.

BUT....,
if you can't wait or don't want to wait that long to pay homage to one of LYNN'S LEADERS from the past, you can attend this event, timed in conjunction with BLACK HISTORY month:

PLANTING WORKSHOP BY THE FOOD PROJECT
A workshop was conducted by the FOOD PROJECT in one of the classrooms at the FORD SCHOOL. Participants were provided with manuals that covered everything from a description of various vegetables, growing seasons and even a grid layout to maximize available space.
Just for going to tonight's workshop attendees will receive in the mail packets of seeds for planting. An open invitation was also given to attend a big workshop later in the spring at the MONROE STREET community garden where FREE transplants will be available.
The virtues of raised gardens as an acceptable answer for urban gardening were promoted by all of the lecturers tonight along with other tips shared by the experienced members of the audience.
Additional information can be obtained about the FOOD PROJECT can be obtained by visiting their website, www.thefoodproject.org or by sending an e mail to buildagarden@thefoodproject.org.
HEREFORD'S HIGH ROCK HIKERS
AREDA HEREFORD spoke at last night's HIGHLAND COALITION meeting of her desire to assemble a group of walkers together to complete the circuit around the tower including the newly constructed million dollars stairs. Once walkers completed the workout they would be treated to the breath taking view that only comes naturally. REMEMBER, BEAUTY IS PAIN!
FORD AT THE FRONT WHERE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN
Wow, the highlands can boast of the availability of a bustling night life at the FORD SCHOOL. With over 250 students enrolled in ESL and GED classes the expanded continuum of care that is now mandated by the state has finally caught up with what the FORD SCHOOL has been doing for twenty years.

FOLLOW OUR LEAD
The HIGHLANDS COALITION was told tonight by me about the positive movement made today by the NEW LYNN COALITION in arranging an appointment on February 7,2012 to show DR. LATHAM a POWERPOINT presentation for possible plans for the expansion of LVTI into a community center modeled after the FORD SCHOOL.
JEFF HAYWARD of the UNITED WAY has agreed to a meeting that same today to see if we can coordinate our efforts.

PLANS TO PLANT?
Tomorrow, January 31, 2012, THE FOOD PROJECT is having a meeting at the FORD SCHOOL at 6 PM discussing the upcoming planting season. The movement is growing.
BED BUGS, ROACHES, AND RATS - TRIFECTA OF TERRIBLE
Councilman Trahant at the meeting!
At tonight's HIGHLAND COALITION meeting at the FORD SCHOOL Councilman Trahant came to our meeting tonight to hear the concerns of local residents who are members of our group.
One story in particular caught the councilman's attention. That was of a renter who told stories of rats, roaches, and bed bugs. There was even the story about the pouring of oil where it should not have been spilled.
Taking names and numbers Councilman Trahant promised swift action promising to have someone from ISD out at the address tomorrow to inspect the site and call the absentee landlord (Malden) to come fix the problem.
HOPEFULLY, HE WILL FOLLOW THROUGH AND THE TENANT WILL RECEIVE QUICK ACTION.

Help Us Build the Hoop House
At the Ford School Garden
Help us complete Harry Harley’s final project, a hoop house[Drawing] at the Ford School garden, in which fish are raised and vegetables grow aquaponically. In growing food year-round, we will:
- combine science and agriculture
- raise children on good, local food
- curb childhood malnutrition
Harry, who died in July, combined service to his country and his community. He grew up in a family that created the motorcycle and helped found the Museum of Science. He played with blues greats and served in Vietnam. He trained soldiers and taught science at Lynn Tech. He ran for School Committee and was the Harry Harley
Treasurer of the Highlands Coalition.
He encouraged us to be on the cutting-edge of urban agriculture, saying: This is what school should be about, hands-on learning, science, math, geography, character-building combined in a creative way. It’s all about keeping curiosity going, not stifling it. It’s everything kids need in life in a caring, community-school setting.
In spite of serious medical problems, Harry found time and energy to design, pay for and partially build the aquaponics system shown on the left. He worked with his son Harrison and friends, trudging through the snow, barely breathing at times.
He was building a wind turbine so that the hoop house would be “free of the grid, teaching youth about microbes and math, raising money for the school, making learning fun. For a few bucks, people can feed their families from their backyard.”
The hoop house will be the first for Lynn and another first for the garden. Your contribution will pay for:
- the design of the system
- materials, such as fish, pump, heater, polycarbonate cover
- youth to build and maintain the system

HICO HERO HIGHLIGHTS HUMANITIES
Wendy Joesph, a HICO debutante worked really hard to help make this project happen.....
The Mass Foundation for the Humanities has granted The Highlands Coalition $10,000 as the primary supporter for their 2012 Youth Workshop project, called “The Meaning of The Highlands neighborhood today.”
With over $50,000 of donated labor and time by The Project Team a few lucky Youth drawn from Coalition partners Girls Inc. and Lynn Community Health Center’s KAYA Youth Program will take a 9 month-long journey of awareness that will culminate in a presentation of certificates of completion, a $100 stipend, and a celebration of Film and Art at Girls’ Inc. in September of 2012.
The Project Team will be collaborating with The Lynn Museum who will be a resource for valuable materials, support as a venue for viewing the film, and as a partner for future exhibits incorporating the project.
The Youth will be engaged with classes on Lynn’s rich Immigration history, interview skills and video production and then will experience The Highlands story by gathering histories from Immigrants from Russia, Greece, Iraq, Nigeria as well as many Latin countries.
The Youth will then create a completed film with visual art and dance to express their new understanding and appreciation of their place within Lynn’s rich ongoing Immigrant experience.
The Highlands Coalition would like to thank Mass Humanities for their sponsorship which will enrich our Youth and create a film able to be viewed at varied locations which will benefit all the Citizens of Lynn for some time to come!
"This program is funded in part by Mass Humanities, which receives support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities."
