CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF HARRISON HARLEY

Help us complete Harry Harley’s final project, a Hoop House at the Ford School Garden, where fish are raised and vegetables grown in a closed system. In growing healthy food year-round, we will:
* combine science and agriculture
* raise children on good, local food
* help curb childhood obesity

Harry, who died in July, combined service to his country and his community. He grew up in a family that created the motorcycle and helped found the Museum of Science. He played with blues greats and served in Vietnam. He trained soldiers and taught science at Lynn Tech. He ran for School Committee and was the Treasurer of the Highlands Coalition.

At the Ford School garden, Harry encouraged us to be on the cutting-edge of urban agriculture, saying:

This is what school should be about, hands-on learning, science, math, geography, character-building combined in a creative way. It’s all about keeping curiosity going, not stifling it. It’s everything kids need in life in a caring, community-school setting.

In spite of serious medical problems, Harry found time and energy to design, pay for and partially build the aquaponics system shown on the left. He worked with his son Harrison and friends, trudging through the snow, barely breathing at times.

He was building a wind turbine so that the hoop house would be “free of the grid, teaching youth about microbes and math, raising money for the school, making learning fun. For a few bucks, people can feed their families from their backyard.”

Please help complete the Harry Harley Hoop House by joining the “4H Club.” The hoop house will be the first for Lynn and another first for the garden.

* materials, such as fish, pump, heater, plastic cover
* youth to build and maintain the system
