Lynn group holds celebration after fighting off foreclosures
Some people are happy with this "victory" for the homeowner, a neighbor in the HIGHLANDS with an all too common problem. Unfortunately we have a few vacant tombstone scattered throughout these hills that offer a testimonial to the more common losses.
You hear others blame the victims for the irresponsibility of not "living within their means". The sad thing is they probably thought they were. The "American Dream" turned into a "Wall Street nightmare" when the wind gusts of reality blew down the complex house of cards built by derivatives and other complex financial instruments designed as a new method of extortion, squeezing the last drops of blood out of a dying middle class.

HICO WHO?
At least when my articles are poorly written I can blame my typing or my brain damage. Usually I don't forget who I'm talking about. If I hadn't been there and part of the planning I wouldn't have known the HIGHLANDS COALITION put this whole thing on, sure the people mentioned helped but it was HICO that led the GASS ATTACK!

YOUR CHANCE TO COOK
It's pretty exciting to me that while I'm going to a PAC meeting tomorrow night that my son, TRIPPY, is going to a HIGHLANDS COALITION sponsored meeting about organizing some development of COOK STREET PARK.
Getting the youth's perspective on what they want will give any proposed project will stand a better chance of succeeding than just having us tell them what they need. And let's face it COOK STREET PARK is a hidden jewel.
Once again anyone interested in getting involved come to the meeting:

PLANT THIS
A garden is more than a place to grow tasty vegetables or pretty flowers. There are plenty of people out there who will fill your head with nutrition data until your belly bursts from over consumption. Then there are those who will fill the air with testimonies with aesthetic testimonies about flowers until you pass out from inhaling the fumes of their exhortations.
Well both sides are a little right but completely wrong. For the real value of a garden you have to dig a little deeper until you hit fertile ground. Whether you have a raised bed or growing tomato plants in old milk jugs on the window sill, the real importance is in the value in the lessons learned.
To be a good and successful gardener, you have to car about something other than yourself. You need to take of the task of nurturing something, watching it grow, and develop into something that will be prized by others. The same criteria are held out for being a good parent. The lessons are transferable but instead of winning blue ribbons for an award-winning crop, we get diplomas issued from our schools. We are producing a bumper crop in the HIGHLANDS with the FORD SCHOOL and the INTERNATIONAL GARDEN.
With the diaspora of raised bed gardens the HIGHLANDS COALITION are building for families in the neighborhood and talk of a proposed expansion into a small section of COOK STREET PARK, everything could be coming up roses for the HIGHLANDS residents.

RECIPE FOR COOK(ING) FOR OUR KIDS
With the rapidly changing demographics of the HIGHLANDS its time to serve up a new recreational dish that satisfy every one's appetite for safe family fun. That hunger can be satisfied with the development of COOK STREET PARK.
The lay of the land is perfect for several tot play structures, a picnic area for family's and even a community garden to promote a healthy lifestyle and and developing a model for some sort of self sustainability. I know that THERESA and ANTONIO from LYSOA are all over anything that promotes the positive development of our youth.
At the HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting last Monday night, I saw THERESA going over a plot plan for COOK STREET PARK with DAVID GASS from the HIGHLANDS COALITION trying to come up with different ideas for the park's proposed renovations. Do I have to tell you who's idea the garden was? THERESA and ANTONIO just think that from strong families come strong kids.
The GASS MAN just wants to raise a gaggle of garden gangsters.

A VIEW ON HIGH(LANDS)
Once again the example of the HIGHLANDS COALITION and FORD SCHOOL have been proven to be ahead of the curve. Tonight at the big UNITED WAY meeting, Lynn - Community by Community Co..., there was a lot of talk about the new philosophy being promulgated by the agency now is community empowerment and that the way to see real change is in the community taking ownership in the services provided to them and by them.
I don't know if they are trying to reinvent the wheel but we've been doing that up here in the HIGHLANDS for years. Guess some people are finally learning!

HIGHLANDS COALITION MEMBER PROMOTING SELF DEFENSE AND SAFETY
Areda Hereford is organizing a women's self defense course at Ford School. All Lynn women can join . NICK CHUM is helping her put the POWER in empowerment.
NEW STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO HICO BOARD REPRESENTS, WELL ME.
Tonight some other members of the HIGHLANDS COALITION decided they wanted to give the youth of the highlands a voice, a chance to speak their concerns for our community. And without asking me, decided that my son, TRIPPY, would be that voice cause well he's not afraid to speak up. I don't know where he gets that from but anyway, I'm proud.
We need to hear all voices.

Toward a Healthy and Green City of Lynn
At the Ford School last week more than 700 people attended an open house and Health Fair.
Families spoke with teachers then sampled our version of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move,” as we
combined food and fitness with music.
To encourage eating healthy food:
• The Food Project’s cider press made gallons of cider from apples donated by Brooksby Farm;
• We sold organic tomato sauce, bottled by Sauces ‘N Love of Lynn;
• Brother’s Deli donated salad that was served on plates from McDonalds;
• Greg Repuccci of No. Shore Community College served apple sauce and promoted canning.
To improve physical fitness:
• Nick Chum kick-boxed and asked women to join a Highlands self-defense group;
• YMCA’s Jose led Zumba exercises / dance, inspiring us to do so on a regular basis;
The band raised spirits with songs from Jumbalaya to B-I-N-G-O. Dozens received flu shots. Fifth graders
talked about parts of plants – the root, stem, leaf and flower.
A $1 donation raffle organized by lunch aides raised over $500 to build the Harry Harley Hoop House,
which will grow vegatables year-round. Salem Five contributed $500.
The epidemic of childhood malnutrion, especially obesity, is very present in Lynn. Cases of cancers
and diabetes are rising, especially among blacks and Latinos. Yet people who eat one pound of fruit
and veggies a day have one-half the cancer rate of the average America.
Lynn schools can become the centers to educate about and produce healthy food. At the elementary
level, every MCAS math and science question can be answered in a garden. All schools should have a
garden and a health fair. They cost so little and do so much.
Working with the Food Project, we built 25 gardens in the Highlands this year. Working with Mass.
DCR and Lynn DPW, we planted 60 trees the past month, mainly along Essex St.
Come on, citizens of Lynn: Let’s get healthy and Go Green!

MORE THAN A HEALTH FAIR
At tonight's HIGHLAND COALITION HEALTH FAIR at the FORD SCHOOL garden guru NICOLAS CHUM put on an awesome display of martial arts and offered to teach a WOMEN'S SELF DEFENSE class in the evenings. It seems like seeds aren't the only thing he can plant.
Speaking of plants, some students from the fifth grade performed an entertaining while educational play about the parts of plants. Should we start planning the Oscar party yet?

NEW GROUP BORN OUT OF THE HIGHLANDS
Echoing the need for every one's views to be heard in order to formulate the homogeneous solutions necessary to solve some of Lynn's many problems. former Ward 4 city council candidate Cefarinio Rosa is calling for the establishment of a new group, "Voice Of The People", to advocate for change in "business as usual".
Another innovation in community activism born out of the Highlands, "Voice Of The People" plans to organize bring all city citizen's cares and concerns forward in a focused message to the appropriate city officials, demanding that the city bring to bear all available resources so that a mutually acceptable resolution to those problems.
This will be your group, interested people need to contact Cef Rosa at ceferinorosa1@gmail.com .

On my way home from the VETERAN'S DAY CEREMONY at Lynn City Hall, I talked with DAVID GASS of the HIGHLANDS COALITION, He was working with NICK CHUM were putting up the plaque commemorating the late HARRISON HARLY, a HIGHLANDS COALITION member and VIETNAM VETERAN. CEF SAYS TO THE ITEM
Ceferino Rosa was asked the biggest challenge facing Ward 4: We have to overcome the negative image that Union Street has earned across the North Shore, by doing that we will address a multitude of smaller, yet significant problems in Ward 4. As a private citizen I have already scheduled a meeting with the mayor’s office to address these concerns and I have called the head of the Latino Business Association to get them on board with my push for greater social and economic development of that street. By joining together with religious and civic leaders we can put boots on the ground to clean up the crime and all the other trash on the streets to help transform what has long been a blighted area into a vibrant, multi-colored flower garden that will add beauty to our Ward 4.
This is a problem for everyone so everyone needs to be involved in the solution. If many voices are heard, they can be blended into a harmonious answer that
will solve this problem. City government has a part to play, a huge part with grants for economic development and community policing, it doesn’t have the
only one. It is up to us as citizens to use our voices to sing a new song for our city with Ward 4 leading the way.

CEF IS A WORKING MAN WHO IS WORKING FOR WARD 4
Atthe base of the Highlands on one side runs the infamous Union Street. Urban lore has long been accepted as fact. This bad reputation tarnishes all of Lynn. My man, CEF ROSA, CANDIDATE FOR WARD 4 COUNCILMAN is going to pull together member's of the mayor's office, the economic development office, business and community leaders to come up with a plan to change the image of Union Street.
Some of the ideas that CEF plans to propose are improving the lighting and putting some crosswalk signs at intersections. Both represent vital public safety improvements. Along that line of safety concerns is making sure there is an enhanced police presence because increased visibility is increased security.
Also just establishing a regular clean-up schedule and a general sprucing up will not only brighten the physical appearance but will lift the spirits of the residents but also give a more positive ambiance to the community.
CEF would welcome your input and suggestions on how we cam improve our home. You may contact him at: ceferinorosa1@gmail.com
Stay tuned for dates and times.

FORD SCHOOL'S HARVEST COLLEGE BOUND
Fresh off winning multiple ribbons at the Topsfield Fair, students from the FORD SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL GARDEN wooed the crowd at the Sustainability Fair at the Lynn Campus of the NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE on October 12, 2011. Students from the FORD SCHOOL demonstrated how award winning vegetables could be grown in raised gardens on patches of asphalt. LSC member, JOHN FORD, was one of the fair goers who witness what could be harvested from these Falcon's nests.
A NEW, OLD DISCOVERY
In last night's LSC candidate debate, several glowing references were made to FORD SCHOOL. Could it be we are on to something here in the HIGHLANDS? Funny, a new discovery that's twenty years old. Well the building is a few years older but the community concept is a little younger. It not only "Takes a Village" but it takes the people in that village. Schools should not be just for kids. We never stop learning.

ABANDONED HOMES, ABANDONED CONSTITUENTS?
Was touring Ward 4 this morning with HIGHLANDS COALITION member and WARD 4 CANDIDATE FOR WARD 4 CITY COUNCILMAN, CEF ROSA and we discovered some troubling information and interesting parallels.
With the sagging economy, many of the historic old homes that have been turned into rental property with absentee landlords that have lost the properties due to FORECLOSURE. Consequently these abandoned houses become a haven for gangs, drugs, and rats. The structures often fall into disrepair and pose a safety hazard to the neighborhood. Now one of the inspectors charged with enforcing the building code happens to be the brother of the current Ward 4 Councilman, Rich Collucci. It's at least an interesting correlation.
Once elected WARD 4 COUNCILMAN, CEF ROSA, will bring with him his years of experience both in the HOUSING and ZONING COMMISSIONS in Chelsea. All of Lynn, not just Ward 4, will benefit from CEF'S past resume. He will play a vital role in the city government of all of LYNN but WARD 4 will be able to call him their own.

Yesterday when CBS NEWS came to THE INTERNATIONAL GARDEN at FORD SCHOOL I learned how lucky, we at the HIGHLANDS COALITION are. It seems our own ANDY and NORRIS each landed jobs with the FOOD CORPS. They are 2 of only 50 nationwide. Over 1200 applied and ANDY scored #2 on the test.

TAG, YOUR IT
Sometimes people don't listen to what they say. Even though they may mean well, they don't really mean what they say.
Monday night at the HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting we were talking about keeping up the parks around here, particularly the HENRY AVENUE park. There was talk about turning over this duty to the GANGS. Really!
That is called a TURF WAR.
What was meant was that we need to engage the youth and empower them to accept some responsibility for their surroundings. It's all about ownership,
I don't know what DAVID GASS was packing but I move too slow to get out of the way of stray shots.

BEING THERE WITHOUT BEING THERE
Particularly here in the Highlands voting can be difficult for us. We know we need to but getting to the polls is not always possible. Former COUNCILOR-AT- LARGE CANDIDATE, HICO MEMBER, and GOOD FRIEND, CALVIN ANDERSON suggested a good suggestion at the HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting Monday night - ABSENTEE BALLOTS. I don't have all the particulars, hopefully will send them to me so I can re-post them.

The HIGHLANDS COALITION meeting tonight suffered a DRASTIC DECLINE in politicians pining for precious post primary attention. Only RICK STARBARD out of the eight potential LSC candidates was in attendance. Sad because our next voting opportunity is NOV. 8. Not too mention HICO will have a debate hosted by the CAPABLE CLEO HEREFORD on Mon. Oct. 17 at the FORD SCHOOL. I wonder who will be brave enough to IGGY THIS EVENT?
Council candidates were sparse as well. Sitting next to me was my man, CEFARINO ROSA, WARD 4 COUNCIL CANDIDATE. Next to him was HONG NET, COUNCILOR-AT-LARGE, top vote getter in WARD 4.
HICO will have a COUNCILOR-AT-LARGE debate at the FORD SCHOOL on Mon., Oct 24. Again it is hoped everybody shows up so I have something to write about. Of course, if they don't show, I'll have MORE to write about.

Voting is very important because failing to vote insures that the faces of the politicians don't accurately reflect the people being governed. I am not just talking about the color of skin but the color of the money that perpetuates the status quo. Viva la Rosa!
A HICO MEMBER AND FORMER COUNCIL CANDIDATE IS HAPPY WITH HONG!

FROM THE LYNN ITEM: 09-22-11
Hong Net has my
support in Lynn race
To The Item Editor,
I thank those who supported me
in the primary election for Lynn
City Councilor-at-Large.
Being a relative newcomer to
our city, and despite having a
solid record of achievement and
visions in Lynn, I always considered
myself an underdog in the
diverse, crowded field.
I am buoyed by the emergence of
some candidates as a real alternative
to the usual. Accordingly, I am
endorsing Hong Net as one of your
city councilor choices on Nov. 8.
Hong’s platform of community
working together toward a united
city most closely aligns itself with
my views. His independence and
able circle of advisors is a fine
combination to welcome to the
Council.
Please, turn out in droves in
November. Better yet, exercise
your right to use an absentee ballot
if you have a physical reason
or plan to be out of town on election
day. Remember, your reasons
are private, and no one can intimidate
you into not requesting an
absentee ballot. It’s the law,
enforced by the Secretary of State.
For safety’s sake, remember that
it can be snowing or otherwise
inclement in New England in
early November. Take potential
danger out of the equation. You
can vote “over the counter” at the
Election Office in City Hall during
business hours, as soon as the
ballots are printed.
Elect Hong Net to the Lynn City
Council on Nov. 8. Do not miss
this opportunity.
With sincere appreciation,
Calvin Anderson

PLANTING OF A PLAQUE
Tonight was the Harrison Harley Memorial Celebration/Fundraiser (Harry was all about raising money). All of the money raised has been committed to be directed to the completion of the construction of the HARRISON HARLY HOOP HOUSE (I can not take credit for that eloquent example of alliteration ecstasy, I wish I could).
Politicians were more prolific than weeds in the garden tonight. From the LYNN CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATES TIM PHELAN, DAN CAHILL, RICH COLUCCI (all incumbents) accompanied by HONG NET, CLAY WALSH, and (my man) CEF ROSA. The LSC CANDIDATES present were RICK STARBARD,MARIA CARRASCO (both LS members) and seeking election for the first-time were CHARLIE GALLO and DELORES DIFILLIPO (Hey I think I spelled it right).
Harry would have been thrilled at the level of attention this event garnered and was smiling down at the fact NICK and ANDY jumped at the opportunity to make this a "teaching moment" with an explanation of aquaponics and the use of fish poop to produce green food. Does anyone want a slice of watermelon?

CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF HARRISON HARLEY
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 6:00 - 8:30PM
AT THE FORD SCHOOL GARDEN
ENJOY ETHNIC FOOD ∞ MUSIC
TICKETS: $25
Help us complete Harry Harley’s final project, a Hoop House at the Ford School Garden, where fish are raised and vegetables grown in a closed system. In growing healthy food year-round, we will:
* combine science and agriculture
* raise children on good, local food
* help curb childhood obesity
Harry, who died in July, combined service to his country and his community. He grew up in a family that created the motorcycle and helped found the Museum of Science. He played with blues greats and served in Vietnam. He trained soldiers and taught science at Lynn Tech. He ran for School Committee and was the Treasurer of the Highlands Coalition.
At the Ford School garden, Harry encouraged us to be on the cutting-edge of urban agriculture, saying:
This is what school should be about, hands-on learning, science, math, geography, character-building combined in a creative way. It’s all about keeping curiosity going, not stifling it. It’s everything kids need in life in a caring, community-school setting.
In spite of serious medical problems, Harry found time and energy to design, pay for and partially build the aquaponics system shown on the left. He worked with his son Harrison and friends, trudging through the snow, barely breathing at times.
He was building a wind turbine so that the hoop house would be “free of the grid, teaching youth about microbes and math, raising money for the school, making learning fun. For a few bucks, people can feed their families from their backyard.”
Please help complete the Harry Harley Hoop House by joining the “4H Club.” The hoop house will be the first for Lynn and another first for the garden.
Your contribution will pay for:
* the design of the system
* materials, such as fish, pump, heater, plastic cover
* youth to build and maintain the system

MARIA (A HICO MEMBER) IS EVERYWHERE!
Usually I like to grill politicians but tonight THE WATCH got to go to a politician's grill. Burgers and sausages were on the menu and COUNSELOR-AT-LARGE CANDIDATE HONG NET was there to spice up the event. Jesse and Natalie Jaeger transformed their backyard into KITCHEN STADIUM and Lynn became host to IRON CHEF AMERICA for an evening.
Also in the audience were CALVIN ANDERSON, CANDIDATE FOR COUNSELOR-AT-LARGE and MARIA CARRASCO, LSC CANDIDATE FOR REELECTION. Lynn's blog world was also represented by TOM SHEENAN of LYNN-SIDE EDITION,

GETTING UP TO CODE
Along with other HIGHLANDS COALITION members Steve and Leslie Greenberg and Areda, we met with Mike Donovan of Inspectional Services Dept. for the City of Lynn to discuss ways to resolve the ADA compliance issues that led to FORD SCHOOL losing its location as a polling place. It was very productive and I'm sure we all look forward to working together in the future.

YOUR WAY WITH GATEWAY
HIGHLANDS COALITION member and GATEWAY PROJECT founder Calvin Anderson (who also should be one of your votes for COUNCILOR-AT-LARGE) issued the following press release:
LYNN, MA-- The victims of September 11, 2001 will be remembered at a sunset candle light vigil to close out the 10th anniversary of the events at the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and Flight 93. The public is invited to attend the event at 7:30pm on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at Gateway Park, across from 80 Sagamore St. in Lynn. Gateway Park was created by volunteers through The Gateway Project for Lynn from a neglected public parcel and dedicated in April 2002 to the memory of 9/11. The candle light vigil is meant as a way to close out a day of national and local observances of the anniversary.

BANG YOUR GONG FOR HONG!
Saturday HONG NET, CANDIDATE FOR COUNCILMAN-AT-LARGE, came into my satellite office in the third booth on the right at McDonalds. I was having a POWER LUNCH with upcoming rap mogul, SW III (my son actually but it sounds important).
It was GREAT for someone to give a member of the HIGHLANDS COALITION that much respect. TIMES, THEY ARE A CHANGIN!

GET IT RIGHT WITH ROSA!
No other candidate for Lynn City Council, whether it be from any of the Wards or even any of the ones for Councilor-At-Large, has Cefarino Rosa's experience with transportation issues. As a retired MBTA employee, not only does he understand the significance of this issue for economic development, he also knows the people to talk to in order to enlist their support for any possible future expansion. It would be nice to see Ward 4 in the Highlands lead the way in Lynn!
